WEEK 2

the HOME

*CUSTOM WRAPPED SURFBOARD // Call me a poser, but I have to have this surfboard. I discovered this gem via Mate Gallery on Instagram and did a little internet sleuthing to find the artist, which just so happens to offer the piece at less than half the price. The more you know. Local Sources: Mate Gallery (Montecito, CA)

*“EPHRUSSI” by MCKENZIE DOVE // Rebecca Stewart, Editor + Owner of The Scout Guide Birmingham turned me onto McKenzie Dove, a talented Birmingham-based artist. I love her use of plaster, texture, and neutrals and find her work to be a wealth of inspiration. This is just one of her many pieces I have on my wishlist.

*BAMBOO TEMPLE JAR // I know these aren’t vintage, but one day they will be, right? And I just think they’re so stunning. Local Sources: Hyacinth for the Home (Midland, TX), Manse (Old Town Alexandria)

RATTAN BOWL // Catchall bowls like these have been lifesavers in our relationship. They keep all of C’s shit contained so my counters stay clean.

LEWIS & WOOD THROW PILLOW // I love that this print feels refined yet somehow a bit relaxed courtesy of the watercolor-esque brown background.

“SANSA” by LESLIE WEAVER // I’ve been on the hunt for artwork and this print caught my eye. Bonus points for being framed.

1970s BURLWOOD DRESSER BY LANE // Story time again! I scored this exact piece on Facebook Marketplace while living in Austin, TX. My search for mid-century burl wood furniture had taken me to Houston and the kindest seller delivered this beast of a piece — and 6 Mart Stam style cantilever chairs I wish I’d never resold — for a grand total of $1000. I think I paid $350 for the dresser, which I will never, ever part with. It’s a stunning, versatile piece with so much storage.

DECORATIVE TRASH BIN // How darling! Not into the print? You could DIY your own version using a different fabric. I’ve saved a bunch here.

ATHENA CALDERONE X CRATE & BARREL OVERSIZED WOVEN FLUSH MOUNT // After a 12 week backorder, it arrived! For the price, I really like it, even though C and our handyman made lots of hat jokes.

LIZ RATTAN SCONCE // Give me all of the rattan light fixtures!

STRIPED BEACH TOWELS // Our beach towel collection is mainly (okay, only) comprised of towels borrowed from the beach club. I should probably return them and order these.

the KITCHEN

*RIALTO TULIP GLASSES // I got out of the drinking game before I could invest in gorgeous glassware, but I still like to dress up an ice water with the help of a fancy glass and these certainly fit the bill. Local Sources: A’mano (Birmingham, AL), Rococo via The Scout Guide Newport Beach (Costa Mesa, CA).

*RATTAN BAKER // This dresses up a casserole nicely.

SUBLIME PULL OUT TRAY // We have these in our kitchen and they make a huge difference in storage capacity and ease of access. Highly recommend!

*LAGUIOLE CUTLERY // While it’s shocking to hear myself use the phrase “one of my favorite cutlery styles,” it’s true. As it turns out, there’s a bit of controversy when it comes to Laguiole, which is not a brand in and of itself. Rather, Laguiole refers to the tiny mountain village in South France from which the style and craftsmanship originated. After WWII, most forgers moved to the knife capitol of France, Thiers, but one maker remained. Purists believe this maker, Forge de Laguiole, produces the only true brand. All of that is to say: buyer beware of inexpensive Laguiole sets, as there are many imitations that aren’t crafted by the same standards and definitely don’t hold up to dishwasher wear. This is not from one of the handful of makers experts recommend, but it is made in Theirs. but has held up for me rather well. You can read more here. Local Sources: Baker Tatum (San Antonio, TX), P.S. The Letter (Fort Worth, TX),

SEAGRASS COFFEE CARAFE // I cannot wait for the day I get to whip this baby out for guests. Local Sources: You can purchase a nicer version at Holiday Cafe in Alys Beach.

GOLD CHIP CLIPS // This represents a perfect example of intentional buying. I’m sure you could get a pack of 10 chip clips for a dollar at Walmart, but these offer a bit of glamor that, at least for me, is worth the extra few bucks. I want to be surrounded by things that spark joy.

FLAX LINEN NAPKINS // We love a flax linen.

the CLOSET

BIG BUCKLE HIGH GLOSS BIRKENSTOCKS // Recently, I spotted these on one of my chicest friends. I assumed they were expensive, but when I worked up the courage to ask her the maker, she dished that they were tried and true Birkenstocks that were also on sale. Say no more.

*PETIT MACKIE HOOP // Rebecca Pinto is a Santa Rosa Beach-based jewelry designer that lends a touch of wabi-sabi to fine jewelry. A few birthdays ago, Rebecca even hand-delivered a pair of earrings C had picked out for me. I haven’t taken the earrings out since and these are next up on my wish list. Local Sources: Merit (Alys Beach, FL).

*FRENCH MARKET TOTE // In my (not so) humble opinion, these woven totes will never be out of style. And one of my favorite shops, Becasa, has an impressive lineup to satisfy every beach goer’s preferences. Local Sources: Becasa (Santa Rosa Beach, FL & Apalachicola, FL)

*LINEA CHAIN // Another wishlist item from Rebecca Pinto. Local Sources: Merit (Alys Beach, FL).

WAFFLE CREW SOCKS // Not too hot and not too fuzzy, these are my favorite night-time socks.

HUNZA G SEARSUCKER BIKINI // Full disclosure, I have not put a bikini on this summer. But if I were going to, it would be this one. Local Sources: Ophelia (Santa Rosa Beach, FL) has similar colorways and additional styles).

DRAWSTRING DETAIL DRESS // Constantly on the hunt for easy (read: heat and humidity-proof) summer dresses, this option delighted. I’ve ordered it in two colors and wear at least once (okay twice) a week.

PALAIS ROYALE STRIPED COTTON BLEND TOTE // Last week we firmly established my obsession with canvas totes. This one is no exception. Bonus points for a strap!! Local Sources: The Travel Studio (Birmingham, AL)

the BEAUTY

VETIVER + CEDAR WOOD CANDLE // A longtime favorite, this Target candle smells more expensive than it is and makes for a really lovely Fall/Winter scent.

BED HEAD HAIR WAX // A friend of mine turned me onto this hair wax stick for slicked-back buns. I also like it for on-the-go eyebrow styling.

OAI FINE HAIR SHAMPOO + CONDITIONER // For the record, I’ve never found a hair product that thrills me, but this duo does the trick — and it smells good. I like that it’s apparently formulated for fine hair and is paraben-free, phthalate (whatever that is)-free, sulfate-free, and cruelty-free.

GLOW IV VITAMIN-INFUSED SKIN ILLUMINATING ENHANCER // I really like this formula, it’s become my summer go-to in the rare occasions I bother to apply makeup. That said, I remove it immediately when I get home as I hate the feeling of having products on my face. I also wouldn’t recommend hugging anyone while wearing it unless they want a bit of sparkle too.

the ETC.

THE ARTIST’S WAY // This should be required reading for everyone — everyone is creative in their own way, after all. I gleaned much more than creativity from it and cannot say enough about the book.

36 HOURS, EUROPE // Great color, great content. Local Sources: Sundog Books (Seaside, FL)

KODAK FILM CAMERA // Despite dropping out of my photography class in high school and definitely skipping the class on exposure and aperature, I have a great fondness for analog cameras. This vintage-style is no exception and I appreciate the idiot-proof setup.

Asterisks indicates that the item has been sourced from a small business. Where possible, sources for locally-owned shops that carry the item(s) are listed so you can support them in-person!
