WEEK 20

new YEAR, old SHIT

*LOUIS XVI PERIOD BLEACHED WALNUT COMMODE WITH ORIGINAL HARDWARE // Straight from Southern France vintage markets courtesy of Lily Barfield, everyone’s favorite antique dealer. Complete with two drawers, original hardware, and the perfect amount of patina, it’s a piece you have to buy, even if you have nowhere to put it (yet).

SILVER SHELL NAME CARD HOLDERS // For those who’ve pledged to host more in the upcoming year, this is the antique addition to your tablescape you need.

MIDCENTURY MODERN BLOCK PRINT // One of my intentions for the year is to collect art. Our (very limited) art walls beg for it. Half the battle is framing and the juxtaposition of the brutalist work and the ornate frame is fab.

*XL HANDWOVEN BASKET // Use your resolution to declutter as an excuse to purchase this basket that doubles as an art piece. Local Source: Maison Shoppe (Birmingham, AL).

BROWN & CREAM VINTAGE KILIM RUNNER // Recently, I scored a kilim runner at the Duh for Garden & Home tent sale. Patience does pay off. Psst! This looks to be the exact same rug for much less. I have not purchased through this website, so buyer beware. To be on the safe side, I would use the “Make an Offer” option on Chairish for this lower price.

SMALL SHELL DISH // I love the idea of gifting a vintage dish to a newly engaged friend.

PVC HERMÈS KELLY HANDBAG // In 1996, these PVC bags were sent out as invitations to the Hermès Spring/Summer show. A response to the devastating terrorist attacks on public transport the year before, it was a play on the cult-favorite Kelly bag that ensured easy passage through increased security. They were an instant success, inspiring then creative director Martin Margiela to recreate them for their traveling exhibition in Japan, ‘Hermès Exhibition in the Wonderland.’ Visitors to the exhibition could purchase one of these second runs, which read ‘Souvenir de l’Exposition 199X’ (depending on the year it was issued) and ‘Un Voyage au Pays de Merveilles,’ which translates to ‘A Trip to Wonderland.’ The originals, by the way, read ‘HERMÈS COLLECTION ETE 1996,’ ‘Kelly Transparent (Special pour Contrôle Sécurité!)’ and ‘See Through Kelly (A Special for Security Bag Checks!)’ in English across the bottom.

*BRASS HAT // Calling all cowboys. This is a fun paperweight (ahem, decorative object) that, while technically being a Canadian Mountie hat, could pass for a cowboy hat for your favorite western lover.

*VINTAGE MURANO SHELL SCONCES // I’ve been really bored with lighting lately — even Aerin for Visual Comfort becomes a stale after you’ve seen it in 10 spec houses in a row — and vintage options are the only antidote to my mounting boredom. The price is pretty hard to beat, too.

*BOUCLE PILLOW // So this isn’t technically vintage. It’s not even not technically vintage. But it is custom made from a local business and this is my blog. I’ve seen several similar options lately and — call me cheap, call me new-to-the-trade, call me whatever — but I’ve been frankly disgusted by the prices, which have crept towards $500+ per pillow. Sure, you get the insert, but unless it’s filled with duck feathers from an endangered duck hand-plucked by a crown prince, I can’t justify the price. Try this instead.

Asterisks indicates that the item has been sourced from a small business. Where possible, sources for locally-owned shops that carry the item(s) are also listed so you can support them in-person! Please note I may earn commission when you shop certain links, though I also encourage you to let them know in the checkout or notes section that the WEEKLY sent you! Thank you for supporting my small business!
