GUEST EDIT: NEWPORT BEACH, PART TWO

To honor the launch of The Scout Guide Newport Beach, Volume 2, Editor, Owner, and dear friend Catherine Lowe and I put together this guest edit. Featuring finds from the many incredible businesses featured within the pages of Volume 2, the guest edit hints at both the new guide’s colors and inspiration.

For those unfamiliar, The Scout Guide Newport Beach is part of a national network of city guides dedicated to celebrating small, independent businesses. Each guide is locally owned and locally edited, making it a unique resource for discovery — whether you’re a longtime local reconnecting with the pulse of your hometown or a traveler in search of a thoroughly local experience.

Since 2018, I’ve consulted for guides from Palm Beach to Newport Beach, working with editors to (among other things — writing! graphic design!) navigate the ever-changing landscape of digital media while also honoring the The Scout Guide’s guiding belief in the power and permanence of print. I was connected with Catherine through TSG’s editor network around the time she purchased the guide and have adored watching her curate a vibrant community and stunning annual guide.

My hope is that this guest edit speaks to the breadth of the locally-owned businesses she has Scouted for Volume 2. It’s a hefty one, so buckle up and get your credit card ready. If you’re local, I highly recommend popping into each shop to purchase the items in which you’re interested. In addition to the local implications of shopping locally (around 75 cents for every dollar spent locally stays within the community), it’s an ultra-human experience. All of these businesses have been “scouted,” at least in part, for their top-notch customer service. Don’t forget to tell them Scout sent you! Why? It helps them know how to continue to support their business and, by extension, the small, locally-owned business that is The Scout Guide Newport Beach.
